Netflix for PS3, Wii and XBOX

Starting today, US and Canadian gamers can finally stream movies and TV shows on their PS3s and Wiis without that pesky spindle-hogging disc.

All they need is the new Netflix application, downloadable gratis on either platform.

The Wii’s clearly the lower-end choice here, since it’s limited to standard definition video streaming, but if you’re just trying to keep the kids happy, no one’s counting resolution lines. That, and navigating with the Wii Remote trumps a gamepad any day, though I’m certain Move and Kinect support are in the offing.

The PS3 version, whose installer should be available later today, will offer dramatically more than either Nintendo or Microsoft, including Dolby 5.1 surround and 1080p support. I called it the “best version yet” last week. Because it will be…until Microsoft responds in kind.

Nintendo’s president Reggie Fils-Aime claims that “more than 3 million Wii systems have already connected to Netflix.” Any bets that figure doubles in 2011? I’ll place one.

Take note Microsoft. Sony and Nintendo now offer native Netflix support without your $50 a year Xbox LIVE “Gold” membership premium.
